A Birthday Card For Cameron

http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806
It was my hubby's birthday last Thursday!  Here is the fun card I created for him.  I love the colours and texture - and more importantly so did he!!

This card was created a little while back when I was making background panels with my crafty friend.  You might remember my posts on the "smooshing" technique - but if not click here to check them out:
Smooshing Dotty Angles Card 1
Smooshing Dotty Angles Card 2
A Smoosh For Mum

With this card you will notice the colours are even more vibrant.  We didn't spritz as much water this time - and we didn't smoosh the inks as much.  The result is pretty glorious.

I then used the Hexagon Hive Thinlits Die to cut out the black cardstock. With the cut out hexagons I embossed some white embossing powder on some stamped images from the Honeycomb Hello stamp set.  It is rather tricky to emboss teeny tiny pieces (without frying one's hand under the heat gun) so these did fly around a bit an knock some of the embossing powder off - plus I forgot to use my embossing buddy (tsk tsk!).  Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the card overall - and Cameron keeps saying how much he likes it.

Our Hearfelt Thanks

http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806

My Dad has been undergoing cancer treatment this year and he is just about to finish up the cycle of treatment.  Last week we received some fantastic news about his health for which we are very relieved.  Dad asked me to create a thank you card that he could give to the wonderful people conducting his treatment.  He has treatment everyday so has built up a great rapport with them.

http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806

This card came about after seeing a fellow Stampin' Up! team member's Mother's Day card that she made for her Mum this year.  Jenna had used the Painted Petals stamp set from the Occasions Catalogue.  The colours used included Blackberry Bliss, Sahara Sand, Crumb Cake, Strawberry Slush and Pistachio Pudding.  I loved the layout, colours and EVERYTHING - and knew that I wanted to case it!!  I had the idea to change this card into a masculine card - using different stamps, embossing folder, punches, and colours.  The basic layout of the card remains the same - as does the use of the stripes and dots stamp from the Painted Petals stamp set.

http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806

I've used the retiring stamp set "By The Seashore" as well as some stamps from "Painted Petals". Cardstock colours used are: Island Indigo, Sahara Sand, and Whisper White.  Ink colours are Baja Breeze (retired colour), Crumb Cake and Island Indigo. I've also used one of my favourite embossing folders: Pretty Print - it is in the clearance rack in my online store.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing this project.

Video: Watercolour Shadows and Highlights Technique

Here is a video that shows you how to watercolour a stamped image.  Just adding some touches over colour to the image can make a stunning project.

You will notice that Carrie from Stampin' Up! uses an Aqua Painter to lift ink from the lids of the ink pads. You fill the tube inside the Aqua Painter with some water - give the tube a little squeeze when dabbing the brush with the ink and you will get an instant ink wash.

Adding more water to the ink makes a lighter colour. Holding back on the water gives a darker brush of ink into the image.

Aqua Painters are available from my Online Store. You receive two in the pack - one with a medium brush tip and one with a large brush tip. Check them out in my store - there are some project ideas there too!

Wish Upon A Star

http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806
Our young friend Liam celebrated his 6th birthday and this was the bright card I made for him.  Liam quite enjoys stamping too and really loves star stamps so I thought he would enjoy this card.

I've used the Big Shot to die cut the Bright & Beautiful Star that I stamped out as well as some plain cardstock coloured stars. The banner framelit also came in handy for the Make A Wish sentiment that I had stamped out.  I've also grabbed one of my favourite embossing folders - decorative dots and have run some of the stars through.  The products I have used appear below:

My Stampin' Up! Convention Roomie Gifts

http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806
For the recent Stampin' Up! Convention on the Gold Coast I was fortunate enough to share a holiday house with some lovely Stampin' Up! Demonstrators from Newcastle and Victoria.  There were 7 of us sharing the house which was only a short walk away from the convention centre. We all made up roomie gifts for each other - so it was a lot of fun to see the creativity of the other ladies!

Here is the gift that I made for each of my roomies.  I had fun with mixed media to create an individual note board for placing on a fridge or filing cabinet. For the backing board of the project I have use the very thick cardboard that comes with Stampin' Up! Designer Series Paper.  A lot of people would probably just chuck it out - but it is soooo useful for lots of projects!
http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806
To prep the board I painted it with white gesso.  Once this was dried I tore up the Stacked With Love Designer Series Paper from the Occasions Catalogue creating an interesting collage of the papers when these were glued down with Liquid Multipurpose Glue.  Next I stamped the Bright & Beautiful Stars and die-cut these with the star framelits. I also cut stars out of plain coloured cardstock and then embossed with the Decorative Dots embossing folder. These were then adhered with the Liquid Multipurpose Glue.  Next I used the Stars Mask and some Impasto to give the project some more texture. I left the Impasto stars to dry out overnight.  Next I worked in some red paint to highlight the texture on the stars and embossed areas - I also painted around the edge of the project and worked the paint into the torn papers.  Last was sealing the project with some gloss varnish - though Crystal Effects would have worked here as well.
http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806
Another fun part of the project was dressing up the plain note pads that I had bought from Daiso very cheaply.  The covers on the note pads are a white plastic - so I decided to use Jet Black Staz On Ink to stamp the sentiment and hearts on (both came from the Hello Life Stamp Set).  Staz On ink is a permanent ink that does not rub off plastic or glass surfaces so it looks wonderful on the notepads. To pull the project together I grabbed some super strong magnets (again from Daiso) - lucky for me they had red or white ones which worked perfectly with my project colours :)

I was pretty happy how the projects turned out. Each one was different too.

If you have any questions about this project send me a message. I rather enjoyed doing a bit of collage and mixed media for these gifts.

Happy crafting!

My Stampin' Up! Convention Swaps

http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806
Part of the fun of Stampin' Up! Conventions is to create swaps.  At the start of convention everyone meets in the foyer and swaps card fronts with others.  By the end of this swapping session everyone has met new people and comes away with lots of new ideas to take home.

These are the swaps that I made - I've used the faux tearing technique.  As I am a very time poor mummy, I needed to make something that I could do in bulk fairly quickly.  To complete 50 of these I implemented a production line!
  • Whisper white panels cut to the same size
  • Tearing some white photo copy paper and laying it down on scrap.  I then slipped in two WW panels under the torn photocopy paper and placed some washi tape on the torn paper to hold it in place.
  • Then using my brayer and chosen inkpad - I rolled the brayer over the exposed cardstock.  The torn photocopy hides the middle of the WW panels.
  • I found that I could do 2 panels of WW at a time - and could then slip the panels out and then slip new panels under, however I could only do this change over 3 times before the photocopy paper started to leak the ink.
  • I didn't mind having to tear more photocopy paper as it was a good chance to change colours.  In the end I had quite a few swaps in multiple colours which was nice as the ladies were able to pick their favourite colour.
  • I then stamped with Memento tuxedo black ink the lace flower from Petal Potpourri stamp set and the sentiment from Hello Life stamp set (one of my favourite stamp sets!).
  • Last part of the production line was adhering with glue dots sequins and stars.
I think they look rather striking!
http://www3.stampinup.com/ECWeb/default.aspx?dbwsdemoid=4011806
I hope you have enjoyed seeing this project.  I really love the effect of the faux tearing technique.  I do recommend having reinkers for your ink pads if you try this technique out as it does use the ink up fast!

Please contact me if you have any questions about this technique.
